Benefits of Drinking Water

Everyone can enjoy the benefits of drinking water for optimal health. Your Body’s Many Cries for Water by Dr. Batmanghelidj states that water is the body’s most important nutrient.

The human body is composed of 55 to 75% water. Brain tissue can be up to 85% water.

All of the 100 trillion cells of your body are filled with fluid that is mostly water. The cells are surrounded by a fluid which is mostly water.

Even the blood is 92% water. The intestinal, gastric, saliva and pancreatic juices are 98% water.

What happens if you aren't getting enough water?

The brain operates with hydroelectric energy - the energy produced from water moving in and out of cells. Without enough water your mind can feel sluggish and even depressed.

Asthma, allergies, peptic ulcers, gastric reflux, back pain, high blood pressure, diabetes and more can be related to the lack of sufficient water.

When your bowels do not have enough water, the stools become hard and resist movement through the colon. The longer they remain, the more likely that the colon wall will reabsorb toxins back into the body.

Oftentimes pain is a signal of dehydration in the body.

The benefits of drinking water are that many of these symptoms are alleviated.

How much water should I drink?

While all authorities agree that most of us need to increase our water intake, there are different suggestions for what is the optimal amount.

Some suggest to divide your weight in pounds and drink this many ounces of water per day.

For example, a 200 pound person:

200 ÷ 2 = 100 oz

100 oz ÷ 8 oz/cup = 12.5 cups of water per day

Others suggest each person should drink at least eight to ten 8 oz glasses of water per day.
